Well January is about to hit, and that means the gyms are about to get flooded! Every man and his dog has decided that 2018 is going to be their year of fitness! By the time February rolls around, the attendance has halved and most resolutions have been forsaken. In this article, I’m going to give you some tips to best increase your chances of being one of those that stick with it.
Rule #1 Set yourself some goals, whether it be to change your body composition (lose fat, gain muscle, lose size etc.). Decide exactly what you want out of your exercise program and write it down. Once it is written in your diary, your phone or wherever else you jot it down on, you will be far more likely to stick to your program as you will be regularly reminded of your reasons behind it.
Rule #2 Ensure your program is effective and tailored to suit your individual goals (that you wrote down earlier). You can do this by enlisting the help of an exercise professional or by doing your own research. Once you have a program that suits your needs, it’s time to scrutinize... Is this a program you can see yourself enjoying / sticking to? If the answer is no, make changes early, before you get bored!
Rule #3 If your plan is focused on changing body composition, it is important to pair your program with proper eating, a full blown diet is not necessarily needed for everybody, but just try to aim your food consumption in the same direction as your exercise program and you will see results so much faster.
Rule #4 Start training with like-minded friends, but don’t depend on them. Training with a friend can be so much more fun than training solo, so beginning your program with a buddy can be a great way to stay on track together. Don’t rely on your workout buddy though! Studies show that only 8% of people stick to their New Year Resolutions! Don’t let your friend dropping off the wagon stop you from achieving your goals!
Rule #5 Start low – progress slowly. You are better off starting your program at a low level, that way you are safer and you will see faster / greater results which will lead to higher levels of motivation and longevity in your program.
Well, there’s my big 5 tips for you. Good luck this year, try to be one of the few that stick with it!
